Street Photography Workshop with David Kalb

Distinguished Gentleman, New York City, 2023

Begin your journey into street photography with accomplished photographer and Viewpoint Board of Directors President David Kalb. The workshop will include both classroom and “real-world” training to get you started in this interesting and exciting photo technique.

After brief Introductions, David will present a slide presentation with some of his street images from around the world.  Included in this First portion of the workshop will be a discussion on a number of topics, including the following:

  • Seven Key Tips for Capturing Great Street Photos
  • The perception that street photography is limited to actual “streets” or people
  • Missed opportunities
  • Where to look for that decisive moment

In Part II of the workshop, we’ll journey to the street with our cameras. With David’s oversite, we’ll walk to the nearby farmer’s market and points beyond, concentrating on the following concepts:

  • Preparing for the unexpected – camera readiness
  • Photographing people, from candid to portraiture.
  • Gaining confidence in photographing strangers

For Part III, we’ll return to the classroom, where each student will select up to three images to share with the group.  You’ll receive instructor comments and critiques, as well as those from the group.  As a bonus, you’ll be able to select one of your images to be printed by David – ready for you to pick up at Viewpoint two weeks after the workshop.

What to Bring:

  • Your DSLR or mirrorless camera with extra battery (if you have one).
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Comfortable shoes (walking may be as much as 1.5 miles)
  • Computer, if interested in sharing images
  • Participants should have a familiarity with camera functions and knowledge of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.
