Steve Solinsky: Of Stillness & Light

The title hints at the idea there’s much more here than just a collection of photos documenting things. The artist weaves in his insights about the visual trail of wonder that images from the world have inspired, and his recognition that what buoys his art is a doorway into spiritual initiation.

Solinsky shares echoing views from his years of Buddhist practice. He suggests that artists, as spiritual wanderers, are challenged to reframe the collective conventional world to which we’re all so highly conditioned, into a liberated view that reveals the surprises, subtle beauty, meaning, and splendor of all that surrounds us.

Solinsky’s upcoming book, Of Stillness & Light, is an illustrated travelogue of his adventure in focusing perception upon spirit. The photographs with text work as metaphors for revealing the pitfalls and potential illuminations for how spirit, as experienced in the stillness, beauty, and one’s awe, may awaken a renewed clarity of view. The subject of this exhibit is not so much the subjects he’s chosen, but from a liberated point of view, imagery’s enigmatic power to inspire.

Steve Solinsky

Bio

Steve Solinsky began his serious work in photography in the 1970s, and over these years has worked with the conventions and equipment of the times. He’s used large and medium format cameras with film and labored in the darkroom creating color prints in trays and machines, and even dabbled with the rigors of dye-transfer printing. These were the “dues-paying years” where he learned a lot about the subtle power of color, the limitations of the medium, and his own deep passion for expressing awe with the world.

With the breakthroughs and technological advances of the digital age, he continues with his work using digital cameras and pigment-based inkjet printers.

In the seventies, he humbly brought his work to the world through art festivals in various urban centers. His close contact with the viewing audience was instrumental in gaining a better understanding of human perception and how images are seen. This has been the underlying intrigue that has fueled his art. Solinsky’s images have been published in various magazines and journals including an extensive article in a 1997 issue of View Camera Magazine.

In 2004 he opened what was to become the very successful the Mowen Solinsky Gallery in Nevada City with fellow artist and sculptor, John Mowen. Affiliations with other galleries in major art centers have come and gone, with continuing emphasis mostly through word of mouth, the internet, and warm contact directly with his clientele.
